Home practice is required for all children in the Speech Improvement Class and is strongly encouraged for all students with IEPs. The purpose of home practice is to promote generalization by further increasing the automaticity of sound production at different levels of difficulty (sounds, syllables, words, phrases, sentences and conversation). Research has shown that children who practice at home are significantly more likely to generalize sounds than those who do not (ASHA NOMS, 2008). This handout features suggestions for maximizing the effectiveness of homework.
